“Best Buy is to be commended for their volunteer program which brought out several employees to help set up and clean up after the event,” John Pritchard, Executive Director of St. John’s Retirement Village said. “They also helped during the event. They are very dedicated and a tremendous help.”

Other sponsors include: St. John’s United Church of Christ, Corner Drug, Co., River City Bank, V. Caldwell Family brings tranquility to Manor East Garden

Wedding

Butterflies and birds bring tranquility with them as they feed on colorful blooms scattered throughout the courtyard garden in Manor East at St. John’s Retirement Village. The garden was recently renovated to attract butterflies and birds, at the request of a former resident’s family – Doris Caldwell. Doris loved gardens and fountains. The center flower bed reflects her passion with a beautiful fountain shaped like flowers. The flowing water will provide peaceful sounds to residents while providing a cool spot for birds to touch down during the lazy hot days of summer.

The grounds throughout the campus are a key attraction for residents at St. John’s Retirement Village/Stollwood Convalescent Hospital. Feel free to take a walk on the 14-acre campus and escape into tranquility among the colorful courtyards

William Elliott and Dorothy Kilpatrick

Wedding

William Elliott, 92, and Dorothy Kilpatrick, 98, were married in St. John’s Chapel September 19, 2008. The couple met at the Unified Fellowship Church in Woodland two years ago, about the time Bill moved to St. John’s Retirement Village. Dorothy has lived at St. John’s for 10 Years. They plan to live together on campus.
“Neither of us ever intended to marry again….but I love her and she needed me so I proposed,” Bill said.
The couple’s union was celebrated by family, staff and residents. They were married by English Bishop and St. John’s resident Ron Coady.
“We still haven’t touched the ground,” Bill said. “We never dreamed we would have that kind of a ceremony, the staff treated us like royalty. They wouldn’t let us see the Chapel until it was time. I was speechless. I still am.”
Dorothy is mother to four daughters and two sons. Two of her daughters have passed on. Bill is father to three sons and a daughter.
“All of our kids think it’s wonderful,” Dorothy said.
This is the first time a couple has been married at St. John’s Retirement Village, an assisted living and convalescent hospital facility in Woodland.
“We are very happy for the newlyweds,” said John Pritchard, executive director at St. John’s Retirement Village/Stollwood Convalescent Hospital. “I’m glad staff could make their day special.”

Mildred’s 100th Birthday

Mildred Hartsock

Mildred Jacobi Hartsock celebrated her 100th birthday on September 20, 2008 in the chapel with friends and family.
She was born September 23, 1908 in Madison, Nebraska. She raised her family and spent her working career in Nebraska. She was a photographer who owned and operated her own studio; she ended her employment career as an office assistant with the Gus Company in Madison, Nebraska.
At the age of 80 Mrs. Hartsock moved to an apartment in Washington state and began spending six months of the year in Sacramento with her daughter, Bethel. At age 90 she moved to an assisted living apartment, coming to Stollwood Convalescent Hospital at the age of 92.
Mrs. Hartsock has four children, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The family celebrated this great milestone with an hors d’oeuvres buffet and three birthday cakes. The cakes were: chocolate genache covered with sugar hibiscus and wild flowers; a round sugar-free cake and a white champagne cake covered with sugar roses and vines. Satin ribbons of mauve, rose and pink entwined and linked the three cakes. Over the cakes were suspended balloons forming the number “100” and throughout the room 101 floating balloons roamed free as a symbol of good luck .
Mildred’s daughter-in-law Marilyn Hartsock conducted a cake cutting ceremony. Piano music, featuring many of Mrs. Hartsock’s favorites was provided throughout the celebration by St. John’s staff member Roberto Gomez.
“Activity Director Rose Burton worked very hard to make this a special celebration for Mildred,” said Executive Director John Pritchard who also honored Mildred with a bouquet of long stemmed roses from the facility.
Mildred’s grandson Scott Newkirk toasted his grandmother and gave her a souvenir collection of coins featuring a 1908 Indianhead penny and a 2008 Sacajawea dollar coin. The coins echoed, in one to one hundred cents, Mrs. Hartsock’s journey of 100 years.
Congratulations Mildred!

SJRV Memory Quilt

Quilt

Pastor Jerry Wells of St. John’s United Christ Church recently reminded us that our loved ones are still with us...in our hearts. And we all remember them at different times in our lives….when we’re going through difficult times and we think of what “mom” would say...or when our memory is jogged and we lovingly remember how much something meant to the one we love.
On September 15, more than 50 loved ones were remembered and honored with the unveiling of the St. John’s Retirement Village Memory Quilt.
Lovingly handcrafted by volunteer Sharon Coloumbe (shown above), the 112-block quilt will be displayed in the receptionist area of the main entry. It will then be displayed throughout the campus at all levels of care. Its final resting place will be in the activity room of the Village.
Proceeds from the quilt will complete the funds needed to replace chairs in the resident library.
“Remembering those who’ve meant so much to us by having their name engraved in such a beautiful piece of artwork, is an honor,” said John Pritchard, Executive Director.
There are still blocks available for those who wish to remember their loved ones on this quilt. To order a memory quilt block call the front desk at 662-1290 and request an order form. Please print clearly for accurate spelling.
